Brain inflammation, a receptor switched off in the lab: the target is head injury, not Alzheimer's
In Birmingham, pharmacologists and neurosurgeons blocked the P2X7 receptor in human immune cells and in slices of cortex removed during surgery. The inflammatory signal fell. The study, published in Brain on 19 February 2026, is about traumatic brain injury. The press release recirculated this week talks of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, which the paper does not study.

Okinawa's blue damselfish: near towns it eats better, and its liver switches on inflammation genes
A team at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology read the active genes of 179 reef fish, Chrysiptera cyanea, collected at 18 sites along the Japanese coast. Heat comes first. The human footprint comes next: adults caught near built-up areas are better fed and show signs of chronic stress. The study appeared in Nature Communications on 9 October 2026.

Number of genes whose expression across the 18 Okinawa sites is associated only with temperature or only with proximity to urban land, in Chrysiptera cyanea juveniles (whole body) and adult livers. Temperature dominates in both groups.

Dairy trans fats cleared by a review that comes from the dairy sector
A review of ten trials and twelve cohort studies concludes that the natural trans fats in milk and cheese do not worsen cardiometabolic risk. Three of the five authors work for dairy industry bodies, which also paid for the study. "Good" cholesterol fell slightly, at the edge of significance. The World Health Organization treats all trans fats as harmful.
Butter, whole milk and cheese contain trans fats. No factory hardening vegetable oils puts them there. Bacteria in the stomachs of ruminants make them, and they pass into meat and milk. The commonest is called trans-vaccenic acid.

The quake at 372 kilometres and the volcano that does not sleep
On 8 October the Tyrrhenian Sea shook north of the Aeolian Islands, but the hypocentre lay in the mantle, inside the plate sinking beneath Calabria. The real risk at Marsili is something else. It is a landslide from the summit and a tsunami that reaches the coast in twenty minutes.

Marsili seen from above, north at the top. The lines join points of equal depth, from the red of the summit, at about 600 metres, to the blue of the floor, below 3,000. The coloured outlines mark the five simulated landslides, (a) to (e).

Central Asia's mammals over 43 million years of climate: a famous turnover was partly in the sieves
Six German researchers rebuilt the history of mammals in Mongolia and northern China between 66 and 23 million years ago, correcting the count for the number of fossils collected. The sudden heat of 56 million years ago, regional drying in the middle Eocene and the cooling of 34 million years ago all left a mark. The shift from large plant eaters to rodents, described in 1998, comes out smaller. The study appeared in Nature Communications on 8 September 2026.
